Flute Saxophone and Clarinet Tuition
I studied music at Sussex University, BAHons, with flute lessons at the Guildhall School of Music. I specialised in performance and composition.
After University, I trained as a community musician with 'Community Music' in London, a one year course validated by Dartington College. Cert. Training (Music) Dartington.
I am a qualified teacher - flute, saxophone and clarinet, with about 30yrs experience. I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians. I have an enhanced DBS certificate. I moved to North Devon at the end of 2008 (near Barnstaple). Before that I was in Bristol where my teaching positions included Clifton High School (13yrs) Redland High School, Queen's College Taunton and wind sectional trainer for two of the county schools orchestras. At Redland and Clifton High, I ran a flute choir and at Clifton also a sax quartet.
In Bristol I played in pit bands for shows, various orchestras, the UWE big band and sax group, a sax quartet and other bits and pieces! Since moving here I have been playing with The Cedars Big Band (now renamed Golden Coast Big Band) and the Barnstaple Concert Band, the Hartland Chamber Orchestra and the North Devon Sinfonia. I also play for shows here in North Devon, some of the more recent ones were The Music Man, Les Miserable, Phantom of the Opera, Made in Dagenham, Into the Woods, Barnum and Half a Sixpence. I have also had the honour of playing with Sinfonia Classica on a couple of occasions! So far that has meant I've been called upon to play flute, alto flute, piccolo, soprano sax, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax and clarinet! Lots of fun! One of the most exciting developments since I moved to Devon was getting a saxophone quartet together with my friend Mike Bartholomew. We eventually found two more players and formed "Simply 4 Saxes". Our first gig was playing for the Teddy Bear's Picnic at RHS Rosemoor More info hereI teach at South Molton
Community College, North Molton Primary, Pilton Community College, Bideford College and Braunton Academy, as well as having a lovely selection of private pupils.
I teach various styles ( I like to introduce lots of different ones!) and always treat my pupils as the individuals that they are, I don't have a set lesson plan and hope it suits everyone! I can put pupils in for exams if they wish, or not if they don't! I teach my pupils to read music and improvise (if you want to!) and include theory on the way. (I can teach theory in a more structured way for those wishing to take exams.) Most important is to have fun and make progress.
I teach on a one to one basis, but if two or three friends would like to have lessons together, that is also possible. I teach all levels and all ages from about 9yrs upwards, adults very welcome. Lessons will be 30mins, 45mins or 1hr depending on standard and individual needs. The cost is £28 per hour (£14 half hour, £21 45mins). If anyone is REALLY keen to learn but feels stretched by the cost, which is at the lower end of the ISM recommendations, I am happy to negotiate!!
I teach at my studio at 30 Boutport Street, Barnstaple.
